A Creative Sanctuary Rooted in History | An Artist Studio Designed to Honor the Past While Inspiring New Work

by Katie Hoke

Nestled on a historic estate in St. Joseph, Missouri, this newly constructed artist studio is a custom-designed retreat for a textile and quilting designer. The studio sits just steps away from the client’s primary residence—a charming carriage house from the turn of the century—and was envisioned as a place where creativity, focus, and reflection could thrive.

From the earliest stages, the design aimed to strike a balance between two seemingly opposing forces: a serene immersion in nature and a bold architectural presence. The result is a two-story garden studio that feels as rooted in its surroundings as the century-old trees nearby, while confidently expressing the client’s personality and creative energy. This is more than a workspace—it’s an extension of the client’s artistic identity, thoughtfully shaped by its context and her craft.

Rooted in Legacy: A Historic Site Reimagined

The site for this new studio carries a long and storied past. Once part of a larger estate, the client’s current home served as the original carriage house. Our new building now stands where a detached garage once stood—lost to time but historically documented. In honoring this legacy, we collaborated with the client to relocate the studio to the same footprint, thereby reestablishing the property’s spatial rhythm while introducing a fresh chapter.

By anchoring the studio in a historically utilized location, we reinforced a sense of continuity across the site. It was important to us—and to the client—that this new construction didn’t feel like an imposition, but rather a natural evolution of the property. It brings new life to a forgotten corner of the landscape, while preserving the story and scale of the estate.

Exterior Materials with a Modern Voice

While the studio draws from the character of the carriage house, its architectural language speaks with a modern voice. Corten steel siding provides a warm, weathered texture that complements the aged brick of the main residence. The brick used in the new studio nods directly to that of the existing home, tying the two structures together in both materiality and tone. Black windows and trim provide crisp contrast and anchor the building with boldness and clarity.

Together, these materials create a rich visual dialogue between past and present. Their durability also ensures the studio will age gracefully in its garden setting, echoing the patina and permanence of the surrounding landscape. The exterior was designed to be simple yet sculptural, allowing material and form to express the story without ornament or excess.

A Dramatic Entrance, Designed to Inspire

Inside, the studio reveals its expressive heart—beginning with a dramatic, custom-designed stair that rises through the entry volume. The client envisioned the entry as a defining moment: a space to welcome visitors, reflect on career milestones, and celebrate creative work in progress. From its scale to its detailing, the stair was crafted as both a sculptural object and a functional path—a curated gallery climbs alongside it, featuring personal pieces, quilts, and textile work.

This entry sequence was intended to be as impressive as it is intimate—a space that both honors the client’s past work and invites future collaborations. We designed the space to offer flexibility in what is displayed, allowing the entry sequence to showcase an evolving collection of important works—ensuring that anyone who enters is immediately immersed in the client’s creative world. Every inch was considered not just for function, but for feeling—designed to inspire, to surprise, and to elevate the everyday act of entering the studio.

Light-Filled Studio, Tailored for Creativity

Upstairs, the studio opens into a vaulted, airy space designed for creativity and focus. With generous ceilings and an abundance of natural light, the studio evokes a sense of loft-like openness while still maintaining privacy. The layout supports every aspect of the client’s work, from sketching and prototyping to cutting, quilting, and designing new fabric lines.

This space was developed in close collaboration with the client, who needed a place to shut out distractions and immerse herself fully in her craft. We designed a unique operable door system to allow her to adapt the environment as her workflow changes—opening up for meetings, or closing off when deep focus is required. Custom casework provides built-in storage and tailored surfaces to support the tools and techniques specific to quilting and textile design. The kitchenette and powder room make the space fully independent, allowing the artist to remain in flow without needing to return to the main house.

A Garden Studio, Private and Immersed in Nature

Positioned to capture the view of the park-like lawn and provide privacy from the nearby road, the studio is immersed in greenery. From the front, it nestles into a natural alcove, embracing the open landscape and creating a gentle connection to the garden beyond. From the back, its placement ensures a deep sense of privacy and retreat, shielding the space from view and distraction.

The surrounding landscape was considered just as carefully as the structure itself. Views out to the lawn create a sense of openness, while the setback from the street forms a natural buffer. The result is a peaceful oasis—an artist studio that feels both connected and removed, grounded and free. For a client whose work is shaped by color, material, and rhythm, the environment itself becomes part of the creative process.
