Site Planning for the Steep Slope
The primary challenge of the project was also its greatest opportunity: a dramatic, steeply sloped site. Rather than fighting against the hill, the design uses it as an opportunity to shape the experience of the home. By embracing the natural slope, the main living areas are essentially elevated into the tree canopy.
The result is a home that feels both grounded and weightless. Massive expanses of glass replace traditional walls, dissolving the boundary between the indoors and the surrounding woods. Whether in the heart of the kitchen or retreating to the primary suite, the landscape remains the focal point, providing a shifting backdrop of light, shadow, and seasonal color.
First Impression: Luxury From the First Step
The entry sequence was carefully designed to emphasize this sense of retreat. From the exterior, the architecture uses low-slung rooflines and natural stone walls to create a feeling of shelter and enclosure. Upon entering, however, the house immediately begins to open up.
High-clerestory windows along the roofline pull natural light into the center of the home, illuminating the organic textures of wood and stone within. This shift from a sheltered, private entry to an expansive interior creates a sense of belonging within the site, ensuring the home feels like a natural extension of the woods rather than an imposition on them.
Where Modern Meets Traditional
Drawing inspiration from the post-and-beam traditions of the Pacific Northwest, the home’s palette is defined by its rich, organic textures and a focus on structural clarity. Natural stone and warm wood tones ground the structure. Black steel accents provide a crisp, modern framework.
By emphasizing the exposed skeleton of the home the design feels both sophisticated and deeply rooted in its environment. Rather than hiding the structure, it is able to become a defining feature of the home’s character.
