Diners are greeted by a large mural depicting an early morning scene of shop keepers setting out their wares. A digital menu board scrolls through custom designed slides that showcase featured dishes alongside a full list of offerings. A large mechanical chase that was unfeasible to relocate provided an opportunity to create a functional feature element for the dining room.
A warm wood slat wall anchored to the honed concrete floors nods to traditional Shoji screens, providing separation between the entry and dining spaces as is customary in Japanese homes.
Using shou sugi ban, planks were charred to provide a rich textural backdrop for displaying chili sauce and seasoning.
The design sensitively responded to the existing conditions of the floor plate, keeping all existing structure and systems in place, while completely transforming the space into an experience not often found in the middle of Kansas.
