Before the studio, the work had begun to take over the house. Canvases, materials, and works in progress moved from room to room, and the client, a local oil painter, found herself craving a place where she could step fully into the creative process.
The backyard became the setting for that retreat. Rather than simply adding workspace, the goal was to create a small building that felt immersed in the landscape—quiet, light-filled, and separate enough to support deep focus, while still connected to the life of the home. The artist wanted to work at a larger scale, move easily between indoors and out, and experience the changing light and seasons as part of her daily practice.
The studio is arranged on two levels, with storage and canvas assembly below and the main workspace tucked into the tree canopy above. Large sliding doors open toward the pool and wraparound porch, allowing the room to expand almost entirely into the landscape. Baltic birch plywood walls bring warmth to the interior, while a suspended fireplace creates a sculptural focal point and a natural place to gather.
Just as important, the studio was never imagined as a place for solitude alone. It was also meant to welcome fellow artists, family, and friends—a setting for conversation, critique, and the informal exchange that often surrounds creative work.
What began as a need for more room became something more meaningful: a retreat for making, a place for community, and a space designed to let creativity unfold without limits.
