From the beginning, the client’s vision was less about creating a house with a view and more about creating a house that was completely immersed in its setting. He wanted to see his property from every room—to watch the light move across the prairie, experience the changing seasons, and feel connected to the land throughout the day. The landscape was not meant to be a backdrop. It was the artwork.
That desire shaped nearly every decision. The home was positioned high on the site to capture long views across the rolling Kansas prairie, while expansive windows frame different moments of the property from room to room. Rather than creating one dramatic view, the architecture establishes a continuous relationship with the landscape, allowing nature to become part of the daily experience of the home.
Inspired by true Mid-Century Modern houses, the design relies on the clarity of a post-and-beam structure to organize the spaces. Expressed beams, vaulted ceilings, and large expanses of glass create rooms that feel open and connected while remaining intimate in scale. The floor plan itself is intentionally simple, allowing the craftsmanship, structural expression, and changing views beyond the glass to provide the richness.
The material palette continues that connection to place. Corten steel, Kansas limestone, exposed concrete, and natural wood were selected for their honesty, texture, and relationship to the colors of the prairie. Together, they give the home a sense of permanence—as though it belongs to the land rather than simply occupying it.
The result is a house shaped by a client’s deep appreciation for his property: a quiet, highly considered place where architecture frames the landscape, structure becomes expression, and the prairie is always present.
